A beautiful black & white fox terrier named Peppy aka Peppy-la-poo was our family dog (the street we lived on was called Territorial Road: thus my drag name Peppy Territorial FYI)
Peppy arrived to the Nelson household as a puppy for my sister.
Never was a dog so beloved as Peppy.
Peppy was a character.
He loved to sing (more of a howl) w/ Mom as she would play her accordion; especially My Wild Irish Rose (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2D7nXEBjSY)
Besides his penchant for a tune, he could hear a can opener from a mile away & also the opening of a bucket of ice cream (he always got a scoop)
He had a bed in the vestibule, but spent many a night at the foot of my bed, and by morning up snuggling near my head.
He was an adventurous pup, and would venture to dangerous places like Mean Old Man Stearns, who shot @ him (bastard)
When Mom went to work in my teen years, it was puppy that would see me off to school & welcome me home after a day of hell dealing w/ the gayboy bashing kids from school.
Problems melted away when he would insist on going out & run around the yard.
Peppy getting on in years. He stopped climbing the stairs to sleep w/ me. He was quiet & slow in movement.
I recall the a morning in 9th grade, when I got up to prepare to catch the bus to school (we lived about 6 miles from town)
Peppy was up, wagging his tail & wanted to get outside.
His energy was noticeably high.
I took this in as I let him out & watched him not walk, but RUN around the yard. He was a puppy again!
After tearing around him came back in & planted himself in the center of the front hall.
Breathing heavily, I stood & watched him. Bewildered as to where all this spunk came from.
Then he sighed.
I remained standing there, looking down @ him.
He was not moving.
I screamed.
the I screamed out his name PEPPY!!
No response.
The bus had come & gone…
I never felt such an emptiness up until that point.
I cried & left him there & walked to school.
I walked on the train tracks all the way to town, arriving around noon.
The day was a blur.
Dad had gotten home early that day & had buried Peppy under a massive Maple or Oak tree (never did know what kind of tree it was)
Mom was crying & sadness filled the house.
I told them about the morning & his antics; we all agreed it was his last run; he knew.
I find that many creatures (humans) have a last moment of clarity & when you think they are about to leave they take one last look/talk & end up reassuring those whom they are leaving that it is ok.
With sadness comes joy in celebrating the time we have w/ one another.

The sad tragedy in Zanesville, Ohio this week is still unfolding.
I hope these animals had one amazing last run, as I believe the owner of the zoo wanted them to be free.
Authorities said they successfully killed 49 of the 56 animals that were released from a wild-animal preserve, ranging from brown bears to Bengal tigers, before any reported injuries in the area.
The deceased animals include a wolf, 6 black bears, 2 grizzly bears, 9 male lions, 9 lionesses, a baboon, 3 mountain lions + 18 tigers, authorities said. They were buried @ the location they were killed.
Authorities were able to transport 6 animals to the Columbus Zoo, a grizzly bear, 3 leopards + 2 monkeys.

Living w/ animals can be a wonderful experience, especially if we choose to learn the valuable lessons animals teach thru their natural enthusiasm, grace, resourcefulness, affection & forgiveness.
